Art, Architecture, and Design

Design as a Reflection?!

You can tell a lot about a country’s culture through their design choices. Architecture, Billboard ads, Fashion choices and Television commercial all say something about the country. Looking around Manila, I see “poorly designed” things all over. Makati is a totally different world, maybe I’m biased, but I just don’t understand why the concept of Makati cannot or does not extend throughout the entire country? With a population of over 11 million people, why are there no multi-level public housing buildings? They say its cause there is no funds for it, but there is money in Manila. How can there be malls that sell Gucci, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Salvatore Ferragamo and Prada, and yet there is no money for basic necessity such as housing?

It’s so difficult to walk around certain parts of the country without being overwhelmed when you witness the desperation of people sitting out on the streets while its raining outside. They are not like some of the homeless people of Seattle who are overweight, that have money for cardboards with some witty comments. The homeless of Manila looks like they haven’t eaten for months, they sit and stare aimlessly among the crowd, and they are probably not educated enough to have witty cardboards… They make for some good photojournalism subjects…

It’s hard to be in a position where you know you can do something and yet no matter what you’re doing it’s not going to be enough…

Okay, now I’m off to be inspired.
